An update from race director Lydia Dickson :
 
Hi Everyone, The Cape Breton Fiddlers Run planning is underway for the 2006 run October 28th and 29th. A breakfast meeting was held in February for new members on the planning committees. Please check out our web site for updates on this years run, pre-registration dates, as well as pictures from 2005, Runners Profiles, Thank You comments from runners ,and the two new runs being added to the Youth Event. The Volunteer drive is on again for this year. Please let us know if you can help out in anyway. Good luck with your training and hope to see you in the fall.

ACTION WEEK PARADE:

Hi ,Please join us for the Action Week Parade. The Cape Breton Fiddlers Run Float will be running in the parade. Please meet at the formation site North End of George Street at 7:30 (night),  Sunday, July 31, 2005, the parade starts at nine PM. We are inviting runners to come out and support the float by running behind with glow sticks or flashing lights. If you have refective gear that would be great also. See you there.

An update  from race director Lydia Dickson:

Pre Registration week-end for the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run
Saturday June 4th, 10 AM to Noon and 2 PM to 4 PM
Delta Sydney, downstairs
See you there.
 
The start and finish of the Run will be located at the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion Sydney Marine Center. There will be a press conference in April for the run and the route will be unveiled at this time.

We are looking for runners to send in their profiles with a picture to cbfiddlersrun@ns.sympatico.ca These profiles will be in the Cape Breton Post for the 26 weeks leading up to the Marathon.
 
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation has announced that the funds raised from this event will go towards the purchase of three new incubators in 2005 for the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit. On average, six babies per day use the services of an incubator. We are pleased to help contribute to the purchase price of  three incubators at the cost of $40,000 each.
 
This is an ambitious project and we hope to have a good turn out and show of support from the public on race day.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Had a chat with the Fiddler's Run Volunteer Coordinator,  Michelle Killam.  In order to make the race weekend a huge success there will be a need for at least 500 Volunteers.  Michelle is looking for some energetic people to step up to the plate and either volunteer for the race weekend, or to perhaps locate volunteers who would be willing to be part of the big race weekend. There is a Volunteer Request Form on the marathon website. There will be two Volunteer Fairs, one on May 22, 2005 to register as a volunteer and on October 2nd,2005 to organize the volunteers.  For further information you may contact Michelle at 565-4298 or email her at killammm@gov.ns.ca. Don't forget folks this race weekend is for a worthy cause so why don't you give Michelle a call or drop her a line and get involved.

Training starts at the YMCA in March for anyone who wants to join in. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:45 AM
Running from March 21- May 28th Monday evenings 5:30 PM- 6:30 PM Coaches are Everett Dickson and Randy Crawley
 
There is also a ladies group training for the half if anyone wants to join in they can e-mail the Race Director at cbfiddlersrun@ns.sympatico.ca
 
There is also interest in a training group for runners who have done cross country running while in school and now have no one to train with. If there are any young people out there 20 and up that want to train let us know, there is a demand for a group to be started in the area.
 
Here are the times and dates for the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run. 
Youth Run: 
Saturday October 29th 10 AM start time.

Marathon and 1/2 Marathon: Sunday October 30th 8 AM start time.
10K and 5 K: Sunday October 30th time to be decided will let you know , shortly after the full and 1/2 start.
There will be a registration and kit pickup at the host hotel Sydney Delta, Friday October 28th 6 PM to 9 PM;  Saturday October 29th 9 AM until 9 PM;   No kits at this late registration.
There will be an Expo and Trade Show during registration at the Delta Friday October 28th 6 PM until 9 PM and Saturday October 29th 9 AM until 9 PM. The Running Room has booked space at this Expo.

Update from Lydia Dickson Marathon Race Director:

Hi Lauchie, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Run" will be on October 30/2005. Start time 8AM. Marathon, 1/2 marathon, 10k, 5k, Kids Run. We are setting up a web page. You will also find us on the Running Room site soon. John Stanton is providing the online registration . I'll let you know our link as soon as we get the site up.

Also John is coming to Sydney in January.  He is letting me know his travel plans so I can set up a meeting and perhaps a run with the local runners. He is coming here to make his decision on whether or not to open a store here.  So a good turn out is a must.  I will update you as I get the info.  Thank You for posting the Marathon.

MARATHON IN THE WORKS FOR INDUSTRIAL CAPE BRETON IN SUPPORT OF THE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION: 

Received a message from Lydia Dickson concerning plans for a marathon set to go some time next summer:

Hi Lauchie,

Could you please post on your web site that I'm putting on a marathon in support of the hospital foundation.

At this time, I'm putting a working committee together. So far everyone I talk to is excited about the news. I had the good luck of running into John Stanton from the Running Room in Toronto. He has agreed to sponsor our event with on line registration and the fees that go with it. He will also provide us with the bibs. This is good news for us. I have been talking to lots of people.

To start, the Hospital Foundation is pleased we want to put on a marathon. The YMCA will send someone to sit on the committee. We all know him as Randy Crawley, board member.There will be someone from Aliant, Judy Mac Intyre. Everett Dickson, Debbie Howie and Chris Milburn from the CB Road Runners have offered to sit on the committee.. I have a lawyer from the hospital that will be on hand for help if we need it, also several of the runners from the hospital.Things are taking off. We have a few routes picked out and a time and date is to be set.

Can you post some of this info and I would like to ask any one who is willing to come out and help with the planning or have any thoughts on the marathon to e-mail me please, at the following address.
