FAVOURITE RUNS

BROADCOVE MARSH ROAD

A while back we had hoped to compile a list of some cool places to run on our Beautiful Island. Check out the e-mail sent to club member, Cathy Chisolm  from  Sandy Morrison, a runner and a Caper living on the mainland.

Hi Cathy,

I was visiting the Cape Breton Road Runners website today, daydreaming of warmer weather and getting back to running, and I noticed your request for running routes in Cape Breton.

I have a spectacular one that I enjoy each summer when camping in Cape Breton.  The run is an out and back run starting at MacLeod’s Campground in Dunvegan along the Broad Cove Marsh Rd with the turn around at the church in Broad Cove.  The Broad Cove Marsh Rd is a quiet dirt road that hugs the coastline with some pretty impressive drop-offs along the route.  The round trip is approximately 8 miles and with its many hills makes for a great workout. The bonus at the end of the run is to jump into the water at the beautiful beach at MacLeod’s.  You would be hard pressed to find a more spectacular run anywhere.
Sandy

Well guys, I guess you all have to check this course out if you are in the Broad Cove area. Thanks to Sandy for dropping us the info. If anyone out there in cyber- land knows of a favorite /cool run, drop us an e-mail and it will be posted.

Keep on running!!

FORTRESS OF LOUISBOURG NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

Hi,

I moved to Sydney last year, and the one thing I missed is the wide open running areas around Louisbourg. The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park was where I did 95% of my running. It's basically free of traffic, even more so in the summer time when the gates go up for tourist season. There are challenging hills and various routes. A good challenging run is from the town up to Kennington cove which totals about 12 miles over all in length. Another route is a circuit from the town up through the Park area for 2 miles and then making a right up towards the administration buildings. There is a mile long climb here (which is great for endurance and strength), beofore making an abrupt right to head back to town. The routes are easy on the knees for those who like to stick to the dirt on the side of the roads, fantastic scenery, and the noticeable quiet of being away from traffic. It's just not the same as trying to dodge traffic in Sydney; the stoplights and the pounding on concrete and pavement.
Another great area to run is up around Point Edward. The route used for the annual 8 mile coast guard run.

As runners who have competed in the Louisbourg Run Thru Time we agree totally with what Bills says.  We believe this run is the probably the most beautiful race in our circuit.
